Free dental Services for the People of Bluefields

This week the NYU dental Outreach Program in collaboration with the College of Nursery has brought a team of 41 specialists to offer free dental services to our communities and to explore the correlation between diabetes and periodontal desease amongst children and adults.
The organization C-LAMB (Christian Latin American Brigade) corrdinated by Emilio and Yolanda Mclean Henríquez, both citizens of Bluefields, have been carrying out this effort for over four years. They have established clinics in the communities of Bluefields, Pearl Lagoon and Tasbapounie in which they screen for diabetes, high blood pressure, diabetes management and high blood pressure management. In the words of Yolanda Mcalean "diabetes is killing our people". Its the third cause of death in Nicaragua.
This effort is in coordination with the Moravian Church and Dr. Kelly Newlin, researcher and specialist in diabetes and also with eh collaboration of Dr. Soza, endocrinologist in Bluefields and retired local nurses of the qualities of Miss Silvia Byers, Murell Newball, Hellen Taylor, Ardeth Williams, Xiomara Tucker among others, and on behalf of the NYU College of Nursery, Rita Decker, Nancy Abraham and Yolanda Mclean Henríquez, research assistant.
